2019 presented several challenges for our team, such as a larger than usual number of smaller projects, the late start to our construction season, terrible weather in the spring, and seemingly never-ending issues that caused many jobs to start and stop repeatedly as we waited on direction from MDOT. However, with teamwork and perseverance we were able to solve these problems and finish our season.

As September is upon us, our projects are in full swing and work will continue to be extremely busy in order to complete before winter sets in. MDOT was very slow in letting out projects to bid last fall. Fortunately, our Estimators have been busy winning work since January and we now have a full season ahead of us as well as a good start on work for 2020 and beyond. This year has been the most difficult I can remember. The tragedy of Dave Snell’s death and the accident that left Klay Gillham injured will forever make 2018 infamous in C.A. Hull history. In addition to these heartbreaks, the industry-wide labor dispute with the Operators Union significantly complicated our work and added stress during an already difficult time. 2018 is off to a strong start even with the terrible winter weather! As of last week, we have worked 150,000 man-hours, which is by far our busiest winter/early spring ever. We are also up to 285 field employees already. Overall, the work is progressing well and we are on track for another successful year.
The one negative that we have seen so far this season is an uptick in injuries. To date we have had 3 recordable and 3 first aid injuries. At this point... Read More
